
UF in Spain: Clinical Shadowing
Shadow physicians in teaching hospitals in Madrid or Terrassa, Spain for 20 hours per week in partnership with the Atlantis program. You will rotate through a different department each week in the local hospital observing physicians and residents in a variety of medical specialties.
The online internship course will allow you to reflect on your experiences and earn 3 UF credits graded S/U. Each week you will also participate in a required cultural excursion of regional or historical interest, enjoying the beauty of Spain and learning about Spanish culture.

Application Process
Student who submit a complete application by the priority deadline are given priority. A select number of reviewed students are invited to meet with the program directors. Depending on the number of applications we receive, we may not be able to invite all applicants. After meeting with a program director, you will be told whether you are accepted to the program. Some students will also be invited to be on a waitlist. If the program does not fill with students who applied by the priority deadline, remaining applicants will be reviewed. You are strongly encouraged to apply by the priority deadline.

Academics
The course is taught online by UF faculty.
IDS4944 – Healthcare in Croatia Internship (3 UF credits, graded S/U)
- This online course in Canvas will run the full UF Summer A term even though the shadowing component only lasts for 4 weeks.
- This course is graded S/U.
Eligibility
- Open to all majors.
- 2.5 GPA.
- All applicants must have a passport valid for at least 6 months past the program end date.
Estimated Program Fee
Madrid: $6877
Terrassa: $6700
Once acceptance has been confirmed, a non-refundable deposit of $395 will be due and collected by November 15th. Deposits will be applied towards total program fees.
Program cost includes:
- Pre-departure support from Atlantis staff (pre-departure orientation, logistics consultation, and international travel resources.
- Shadowing placement for 20 hours per week.
- Tuition for 3 UF credits.
- On-site housing.
- 24/7 Local Staff Support.
- On-site and hospital orientation sessions.
- Transportation to and from the hospital daily as well as transportation for group meals and Atlantis-coordinated excursions.
- Breakfasts.
- Three group meals per week.
- Weekly excursions.
- Wi-fi access in housing (often not high-speed internet).
- International Health Insurance.
Not included:
- Airfare.
- Airport transfer.
- Most meals.
- International cell phone service.
- Additional personal travel and personal expenses.
Housing
Students will be housed in furnished hostels, apartments, hotels, or student housing in shared rooms. Housing details including housing type will not be available until a few weeks before departure. Air-conditioning is not common in European housing and is generally not available.
Activities
This program includes one cultural excursion per-week in the surrounding area. Exact excursion locations are determined each week while on the program, accounting for local weather conditions and may not be available prior.
Pre-Departure Information
Once your application is approved you will receive more information on the next steps. We will offer multiple pre-departure sessions before you go as well as on-site orientations once you arrive in Madrid.
