Growing up in a small hometown with limited opportunities for someone interested in pre-law, I often felt unsure of how to turn my passion for justice and service into a real career. I was always deeply involved in my community, volunteering and trying to make a difference in the lives of others, but I knew I wanted to do more. I wanted to see what existed beyond the familiar streets of my town and understand how people were creating change on a larger scale.

Becoming a student at the University of Florida was the first step toward that dream. As a first-generation college student, stepping onto UF’s campus felt like opening the door to a world I had only imagined. Still, I wondered what my future in law might actually look like. That question began to find its answer in May 2025, when I joined the Beyond120 and Bob Graham Center Washington Excursion.
Traveling to Washington, D.C. was truly transformative. Standing in the heart of our nation’s capital, surrounded by the history and power that shape our laws and policies, I began to see my aspirations come to life. The trip gave me a glimpse into what it means to work in law and public service, and more importantly, it showed me that my background and perspective as a first-generation student have a place in that world.
One of the most powerful lessons I took away from the trip was that a Gator is always willing to help another Gator. Meeting UF alumni who now live and work in D.C. was so inspiring. Whether they were working in government, private practice, or advocacy, each of them took time to share their stories and advice with us. Their kindness and openness reminded me that the Gator Nation is more than a slogan, it’s a community that supports each other wherever we go. Coming from a small town, that sense of connection and support felt incredibly comforting and encouraging.
Another key takeaway for me was learning about the many different paths within the legal field. Before this trip, I thought pursuing a law degree mainly led to becoming a trial lawyer. But during our excursions, I met professionals who were using their legal education in so many unique and impactful ways. Some were working in public policy and shaping legislation. Others were advocating for human rights or serving as legal consultants and analysts in the private and defense sectors. It opened my eyes to the fact that a law degree can be a foundation for a variety of meaningful careers.
This experience did more than just inform me, it motivated me. Being in Washington and seeing what others have accomplished made me realize that countless opportunities are waiting beyond the borders of Florida. It showed me that with hard work, persistence, and community, I can carve out a path that feels both authentic and ambitious.
The Beyond120 and Bob Graham Center Washington Excursion was more than a trip; it was a turning point. It helped me see the world, and myself, differently. I left Washington not only with a deeper understanding of law but with a stronger belief in my potential to make a difference. As a first-generation student, that belief means everything.
