As a psychology student with a passion for understanding human behavior in a legal context, I knew research was a critical part of my academic and professional journey.

This past summer, I found myself halfway across the world in Cape Town, South Africa, through iXperience—a study abroad program that promised professional growth and adventure, and delivered on both.

The encounters I experienced during my shadowing in Italy have forever shaped my perspective on healthcare and life itself.

During my second year at the University of Florida, I began looking into different opportunities and internships that aligned with my interests. I stumbled across the Bob Graham Center for Public Service and the various opportunities they offer.

Shadowing in Croatia was a transformative experience, helping me fully understand how comprehensive the healthcare system is in another country.

As a pre-medical student in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, I sought out a variety of classes and experiences that would give me a holistic perspective on the world of medicine.

As an incoming first-year on a pre-medical track, I knew the importance of academics and traditional learning. However, I did not realize that involvement and experiences outside of classes are just as, if not more, significant as classes.

In partnership with the Beyond120 program and the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, this excursion will expose students to industries related to public policy, government relations, law, education, international relations, public sector and more.

The University of Florida’s College of Liberal Arts and Science offers students the opportunity to study at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Students may choose to participate in the exchange for the Fall semester, Spring Semester, or the whole academic year.

Gaining work experience through internships while in college may seem daunting at first. Often times companies will want varying levels of previous experience or want you to work 15-20 hours a week, which may be difficult to balance with schoolwork.

College is often touted as the time of your life when you’ll gain independence, explore new horizons, and make lifelong memories. For me, that promise became a reality when I embarked on a 4-week journey studying abroad in Pontevedra, Spain where I spent over 80 hours shadowing physicians in a local hospital.

The focus of this 8-week program is a full-time internship with a local company where you will gain valuable professional experience. Internships are available in a wide range of disciplines.

This program aims to provide an introductory international experience and allow students to explore some of the scientific discoveries that have changed the world (in person!), including a visit to Dolly, the world’s first cloned animal (Edinburgh, Scotland), and the original Watson and Crick model of DNA (London, England).

Shadow physicians in teaching hospitals in Croatia for 20 hours per week in partnership with the Atlantis program. We plan to offer placements in Zagreb, however, the final site is subject to change in the event of unanticipated circumstances.

Before beginning my second year at UF, I sought out opportunities to get involved in the Gainesville community through a service-based organization. While I had found several organizations offering occasional community service events, I was hoping to find an organization that I could commit to for the coming three years.

I am currently writing this from Bangkok where I am having the opportunity of a life time, which would not have been possible without the Beyond120 Pre-Health Scholar Program.

After attending the FBI excursion in Tampa, I now understand why the excursions are so popular and beneficial to students. There are certain things you can’t learn in class and I am so grateful I was able to go.

Spend a semester studying and working in Limerick, a rich, cultural heartland city in the West of Ireland. You will take courses at University of Limerick (UL) located on an unspoiled natural environment along the picturesque River Shannon, and home to state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities.

I did not know what to expect but it was definitely one of the most valuable parts of my freshman year. I met a group of older, more experienced students who had great insights into different experiences inside and outside of UF.

As a university student, I believe that some of the most fulfilling experiences and opportunities are those that are unexpected.

Venturing into the unknown can be a daunting task, but if there’s anything I have learned during my time at UF, it’s that you don’t have to do it alone.

To this day, I am very grateful for having been a participant on the Washington D.C. excursion because many of the Gator Alumni I connected with on that trip ended up being my mentors as I worked on Capitol Hill.
